12–5 p.m. • Museum Gardens
Features craft activities, demonstrations, food vendors, music, dance, ceremonia and a mercado. Fun for the whole family. Performers include Danza Xitlalli, Squeezebox Sabroso, Ballet Folklorico Mexicano, Beshbeni, Los Hijos del Azahar, Mariachi San Jose, and Yolanda Aranda Coria. We invite you to bring photocopies of photographs of local artists and activists that have passed away in the last year to add to a community altar.
Participation in the celebration is free. General admission to the museum
galleries, including Days of the Dead exhibition, will be half-price all day.

Evolution of a Sacred Space: Días de los Muertos 2008
Exhibition Opens
This year's Días de los Muertos exhibition, guest curated by Fernando Hernandez, explores the rituals and elements used to honor the dead. The artworks––created by artists (well-known and emerging), schools, and community groups––honor traditional expressions rooted in Meso-American practices, as well as showcase contemporary interpretations of sacred spaces. A communal sacred space was created by forty-five people from the East Bay Art Collaborative, who each made unique 11 x 17-inch boxes that became niches in a Columbarium constructed in the exhibition by Hernandez. Through December 7, 2008.
